About Alpus

Alpus is a dictionary viewer for Android that brings offline access to multiple dictionary formats including StarDict, DSL, XDXF, Dictd, and TSV/Plain files. Load your own dictionaries and search them instantly, anytime, anywhere—without needing an internet connection.

The app excels at flexible searching. Regular search finds exact matches, while extended matching ignores case, diacritics, and punctuation to catch variants you might otherwise miss. Fuzzy search works like a spell checker, helping you find words even when you're unsure of the spelling. Wildcard search lets you define custom search patterns. For comprehensive lookups, full-text search scans every word in every article across all loaded dictionaries—definitions, synonyms, examples, and more—far beyond just headword matches.

A built-in popup translator appears in-page, letting you quickly check definitions without leaving your reading. Keep track of words you look up using the integrated history feature, and bookmark entries you want to revisit. Your search patterns and preferences are remembered across sessions.

Customize how the app works for you. Organize multiple dictionaries into profiles, group them logically, and adjust the visible name of each dictionary to match your workflow. If you use the app across multiple devices, export dictionaries to portable .aaf files and import them elsewhere, or simply copy the configuration folder and dictionary files using your file manager for full synchronization.

Setting up dictionaries is straightforward. Connect your device to a computer, copy your dictionary files to the app's documents folder, then import them using the Manage menu. The app automatically detects and indexes resource files stored in ZIP format alongside your dictionaries. For enhanced searching, you can build a full-text search index—a one-time process that makes every word in the dictionary searchable, though it may take considerable time for large dictionaries.

Alpus runs completely offline once dictionaries are loaded, meaning no data usage, no tracking, and no dependency on internet availability. Whether you're learning a language, researching terminology, or simply exploring definitions across multiple sources, the app delivers fast, reliable lookups powered by your own dictionary collection.

No dictionaries are bundled with Alpus—you provide the dictionary files in supported formats. This design keeps the app lightweight while letting you assemble exactly the dictionaries you need.
